About Intel

Intel was founded in 1968 and is based in Santa Clara, California. It designs and makes processors for desktops, laptops and servers. Shoppers know it mainly for the Core family, with its Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 names, the Xeon processors for servers, and the Arc graphics range.

In the PCs we build, an Intel Core processor suits everything from office and family machines to gaming and creative work. We pair it with a compatible motherboard, memory, cooler and power supply, then build, test and support the finished PC in Worcester, and we can fit upgrades too.

Compatibility is mostly about the socket, the physical connection between processor and motherboard. Intel changes its sockets from time to time, so a new processor may need a new motherboard. Some motherboards take DDR4 memory and others take DDR5, so check the product page or ring us before buying.

Choosing Intel parts

  • Match the socket. An Intel processor only fits a motherboard built for its socket, and the product page names the socket you need.
  • A K at the end of a model name means the processor is unlocked for overclocking. If you will not overclock, a model without the K is usually enough.
  • An F at the end means there is no built-in graphics, so you need a separate graphics card to see anything on screen.
  • Check the memory type. Some Intel motherboards use DDR4 and others DDR5, and the two are not interchangeable. Pick memory to match the motherboard, not the processor alone.

Questions about Intel

What does the F at the end of an Intel processor name mean?

It means the processor has no built-in graphics. You will need a separate graphics card to use a monitor. Processors without the F generally have built-in graphics. The product page makes this clear, and you can ring us to check.

What does the K mean on an Intel processor?

K marks an unlocked desktop processor, which allows overclocking on a suitable motherboard. If you do not plan to overclock, you do not need to pay extra for it. KF is the same but without built-in graphics.

Can I put a new Intel processor in my old motherboard?

Only if the socket matches, and sometimes a BIOS update is needed as well. Intel moves to new sockets from time to time, so a big upgrade often means a new motherboard. Tell us your current board and we will check.

Do Intel processors come with a cooler?

It varies by model, and some do not include one. The product page says what is in the box. We stock coolers and can fit one when we build your PC or carry out an upgrade.

Can you build me a PC with an Intel processor?

Yes. We build, test and support PCs at our Worcester shop. Tell us what you want to use it for and we will suggest a sensible combination of parts. Ring 01905 673738 for honest advice.

Not sure what fits, or want a PC built around Intel parts? Ring us on 01905 673738 for honest advice, or build your own PC and we check every part fits.
