About AMD

AMD, short for Advanced Micro Devices, was founded in 1969 and is based in Santa Clara, California. It designs processors and graphics chips. Most shoppers know it for the Ryzen range of processors for desktop PCs and laptops, the Radeon range of graphics products, and the Epyc processors made for servers.

When we build PCs, an AMD Ryzen processor is a common choice for everyday home machines, gaming PCs and busy workstations. A processor does nothing on its own, so we match it to a suitable motherboard, memory, cooler and power supply, then build, test and support the finished PC at our Worcester workshop.

The main thing to check when choosing is the socket, which is the physical connection between the processor and the motherboard. Ryzen processors for older motherboards use the AM4 socket with DDR4 memory, while newer ones use AM5 with DDR5 memory. They are not interchangeable, so ring us if you are unsure.

AMD is known for

  • Ryzen processors for desktops and laptops
  • Radeon graphics products
  • Epyc processors for servers
  • Processors with built-in graphics, so a separate graphics card is optional

What we stock from AMD

Choosing AMD parts

  • Check the socket first. A Ryzen processor only fits a motherboard with the matching socket, such as AM4 or AM5, and the product page lists which one it needs.
  • Memory type follows the platform. AM4 motherboards take DDR4 and AM5 motherboards take DDR5, so a processor change can mean new memory as well.
  • A processor with built-in graphics can run a screen without a graphics card. Check the product page for this if you plan to add the graphics card later.
  • Even when the socket matches, an older motherboard may need a software update (BIOS update) to recognise a newer processor. Ask us before you buy if you are upgrading.

Questions about AMD

Will an AMD Ryzen processor fit my existing motherboard?

Only if the socket matches. Ryzen processors for AM4 and AM5 are different shapes and do not swap over. Even on the same socket, the motherboard may need a BIOS update. Tell us your motherboard model and we will check it for you.

Do I need a separate graphics card with a Ryzen processor?

It depends on the model. Some Ryzen processors have built-in graphics and can drive a monitor on their own, while others need a separate graphics card. The product page tells you which kind you are looking at, or ring us.

Does an AMD processor come with a cooler?

Some models include a cooler in the box and some do not. Check the product page for each processor. If one is not included we stock coolers, and we can fit it when we build or upgrade your PC.

Can you build me a PC with an AMD processor?

Yes. We build, test and support PCs at our Worcester shop. Tell us what you will use it for and we will suggest a sensible processor, motherboard and memory combination. Ring 01905 673738 for honest advice.

What happens if there is a problem with an AMD part?

The manufacturer's warranty applies, and we can help if something goes wrong. If the part is in a PC we built or an upgrade we fitted, bring it in or ring us and we will help work out what is at fault.

Not sure what fits, or want a PC built around AMD parts? Ring us on 01905 673738 for honest advice, or build your own PC and we check every part fits.
